Chapter Eleven

Shannon woke at dawn but decided not to get up, because for the first time in months, she wasn’t on call. Turning over, she went back to sleep and hours later, pangs of hunger forced her to get out of bed. She had managed to unpack most of her clothes and put them away, but she still had to set up her computer, printer or television. What was the rush?

She’d anticipated spending no more than three months living in the guesthouse before moving into her apartment at the château, so her stay was temporary. Viola revealed that every structure on the property had been rewired and was Wi-Fi accessible, so Shannon decided the sunroom would be the perfect area to set up her electronics.

“Oh no,” she groaned as she picked up her cell phone off the countertop and saw the low power indicator on the screen. She hadn’t charged the phone since before leaving Baltimore. Shannon slipped a pod in the single-serve coffeemaker before she went back upstairs to retrieve the phone’s charger.

Twenty minutes later, Shannon sat at the breakfast island, having drunk a cup of coffee and eaten two slices of wheat toast with peanut butter, and scrolled through her emails. She had several missed calls from Mara, along with her voicemail. Mara had asked that she call because it was important she talk to her. There was also a text message from Joaquin.

She dialed Mara’s number, her heart beating fast, because Mara had called three times. “Please let it not be bad news,” Shannon whispered as she counted off the rings before there was a break in the connection. “What’s up, Mara?” she asked when she heard her friend’s hoarse greeting.

“I don’t know what’s wrong with me, Shannon.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Jordan called me this morning to say he wants to get back together.”

Shannon swallowed an expletive as she shook her head. She did not want to believe Mara was panicking because she didn’t know how to proceed with her emotionally abusive ex. “What is it you want to do, Mara?”

“I don’t know.”

“You don’t know, and I don’t know what to tell you,” Shannon countered.

“What would you do if you were in my situation?”

“Do you want the unvarnished truth, or do you want me to tell you what you want to hear?”

There was a lengthy pause on the other end of the connection, then Mara said, “I need you to be truthful.”

“You’re deserve more than a man who decides to trade you in when he believes he’s found someone better. I know you’re freaking out because you want a baby, but I suggest you forget about this jackass and move on.”

“I hear what you’re saying, Shannon, but I wish you were still in Baltimore so I could hang out with you for a few days just to get away and clear my head.”

“Why don’t you drive up, and I’ll show you what to expect once you come on board.”

“Really?”

Shannon smiled. “Yes, really, Mara. Things are slow here on the weekends, so today and tomorrow works for me.
